:: AKULA (1907) ::

Akula submarine (1907)

The Akula, launched in 1907, was a submarine built for the Russian Imperial Navy. This was the first Russian submarine able to cruise long distances. Also, in 1912 she made the first multi-torpedo volley ever, with five torpedoes. In the Akula, four torpedoes were externally mounted in drop collars following the Drzewiecki system. The hull was single and notorious narrow, but the speed achieved was lesser than expected. During World War I she served with the Baltic Fleet, performing 16 patrols and unsuccessfully attacking the German battleship SMS Beowulf. She struck a mine and sank near Ventspils (Latvia) in November 1915, on her 17th patrol.
